VSDI welcomes infrafon as a new member

We are delighted to welcome infrafon as a new member of our association! The Freiburg-based start-up develops innovative smart badge systems in credit card format that combine the functions of a smartphone with the advantages of a card. The devices improve the efficiency of work processes, especially in the healthcare sector, by offering functions such as check-in, time tracking, smart paging, payment information, medication and sample data as well as safety messages.

We took the opportunity to ask Frieder Hansen, co-founder and CEO of infrafon, a few questions:

VSDI: You founded infrafron in 2021. Can you briefly tell us how the idea for the company came about?

Frieder Hansen: With my previous company, Pyramid AG, we very successfully introduced order automation at McDonalds. The director of Freiburg University Hospital was impressed and asked whether we could also increase efficiency in the hospital. When you start to digitalise human processes, the digital identity ‘who does what?’ is an important building block that we had to take care of.

VSDI: How can your products simplify everyday life in hospitals, for example?

Frieder Hansen: For a fraction of the cost of a smartphone, doctors and hospital staff can log on to systems and devices with their HBA (health professional card) inserted in the Infrafon device and soon with the EUDI identity, without touching anything or using a password, very conveniently and soon to be BSI-certified. A smartphone could also do this, but it always has battery problems, is unwieldy and, above all, very expensive. In addition, all recurring work processes such as dispensing medication, turning patients or simply logistical tasks can be managed in a very simple way.

VSDI: What do you see as the greatest opportunities and challenges in the field of digital identities?

Frieder Hansen: I hope for the successful implementation of genuine offline identification options and compatibility of the EUDI wallet within the 27 member states.

VSDI: What are you most looking forward to in your collaboration with the association and its members?

Frieder Hansen: With Infrafon, we only provide the platform and the hardware, comparable to the smartphone counterpart IOS or Android. It will therefore be important for us to work very closely with identity providers, trust centres and competent integrators as well as with all other stakeholders in the ecosystem.
